Melissa Brown’s group focusses on understanding the molecular basis of multidrug recognition by membrane-bound transport proteins. Prof Melissa Brown undertook her undergraduate studies and PhD at the University of Adelaide. After completing postdoctoral studies at the University of British Columbia, optimising the expression and purification of small cationic antibacterial peptides, she returned to Australia, at the University of Sydney, where she started her research into antimicrobial resistance strategies in Staphylococcus aureus , primarily focusing on membrane-bound efflux pumps. Using molecular and biophysical techniques, her laboratory which relocated to Flinders University in 2007, has provided insights into how proteins bind multiple ligands. She has also expanded these studies to investigate the persistence and resistance mechanisms of the pathogens Neisseria gonorrhoea and Acinetobacter baumannii. Prof. Brown is a Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the Australian Ambassador to the American Society of Microbiology.
